Who We Are

Ferrets North Information and Rescue Society is a group of concerned individuals aimed primarily at increasing public knowledge of domestic ferrets in Prince George and, as we grow, northern British Columbia.

Why We Exist

There are still many people who don't realize that ferrets are (and, as far as anyone can tell, always have been) domestic animals who depend on the kindness of humans to survive. The reason you rarely, if ever, see stray ferrets is because they absolutely cannot survive on their own. More than even cats and dogs, ferrets need the kindness of a loving home.

Unfortunately, many people get pet ferrets not realizing the responsibilities needed, and then either abandon them (thus sealing their fate) or handing them over to the SPCA. While the SPCA is a fine organization, ferrets require a special level of care that very few organizations can provide: as a result, every ferret given over to a regional branch of the SPCA in the province winds up in the care of the Vancouver SPCA. This puts an undue strain on their resources, and it also means that the only way for a responsible pet owner to get a ferret in northern BC is to buy one from a pet store. There is no way to adopt one. We want to change that.

What We Do

As the name implies, we are an INFORMATION and RESCUE society. By providing information, we hope to make potential ferret owners aware of what you are signing up for when you get a pet ferret, and in doing so make it less likely that these pets are abandoned or surrendered when people realize they have signed up for more than they bargained for. We also want to act as a support network for existing ferret owners, connecting them with a community of individuals who have gone through ferret ownership before and will be able to provide information and advice about how best to deal with any challenges that may arise.

As far as the rescue goes, as long as we have the resources to do so, we hope to work with organizations such as the SPCA to provide ferrets in need with the care and attention they need. By providing foster homes we will be able to care for and rehabilitate ferrets who have come from abusive situations or simply need specialized care. We also hope to be able to re-adopt ferrets to "forever homes," where they will be able to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Volunteer & Foster

We are looking for all sorts of volunteers, and it doesn't matter whether you're an experienced ferret owner or not. We need everything from people who just want to donate food, bedding, or some money to people willing to be full-time fosters to people willing to put up posters and help spread the word. If you're interested, please e-mail us at ferretsnorth@gmail.com, subject line: volunteer. We look forward to hearing from you!

If you are interested in fostering ferrets while we look for a forever home, please do the following:

1. Read the Ferrets North Foster Requirements (you can read it later on this page or download it in .pdf and .doc)

2. If you think you have what it takes, fill our the Ferrets North Foster Application (you can read it by scrolling down on this page or download it in .pdf or .doc)

3. Email us the completed form with the subject line "Foster."

*** Please keep in mind that fosters will come in at very short notice and that ferrets entering our care may be assigned to foster homes based on level of experience and the ferret's health. We will contact you to see if you are still interested in fostering BEFORE the ferret is in our care, but being contacted does not necessarily guarantee that the ferret will be placed with you.

*** We also need experienced homes willing to take on special needs ferrets. Unfortunately, the society would not able to cover most of the medical expenses of these animals; such expenses would be up to the permanent foster family.

Adopt

THE ADOPTION PROCESS: To ensure that our ferrets get the very best forever home possible, all potential adopters must go through an adoption process. The process begins with the completion of an online adoption application. Once the application is approved by the directors, an over the phone interview is conducted, followed by a meeting between the potential adopters and foster family. The final step in the adoption process is a home visit to ensure that the family is prepared for their new furry arrival.

If you have any questions regarding animals that we have up for adoption contact us.

Adoption forms can be found below and can be filled out and emailed to info@ferretsnorth.org or dropped off in person at Timberline Footfitters (please staple forms together and mark the application or envelope "Attn: Roxsann - Adoption Application")
NOTICE: adoption forms CANNOT be filled out on behalf of a third party.

Surrender

If you have a ferret that you're not sure you can look after, please contact us. We'll try to help you find a solution. DO NOT let the ferrets go, as releasing them into the wild or into the streets is a sure way to end their lives.

When a ferret is surrendered to us, we like to have all the background information so we can give it the specialized care and attention it needs. To make sure we have access to this information, please fill out a Surrender Form (viewable below, or download in .pdf or .doc)
